Internet Speed Test
This test measures how quickly data travels between your device and a remote server. It checks download speed, upload speed and latency so you can compare your current connection with the speed advertised by your internet provider.
For the most useful internet speed test result, use the device and connection you normally rely on. A wired desktop computer can produce very different results from a phone connected through WiFi in another room.
How the Speed Test Works
Your device exchanges test data with a remote server and measures how much can be transferred during a short period. Download speed measures data coming to your device, while upload speed measures data sent from your device.
Results from an internet speed test are normally shown in megabits per second, written as Mbps. Ping and latency are shown in milliseconds, written as ms. A higher Mbps result usually means more available bandwidth, while lower latency usually means a more responsive connection.
WiFi Speed Test
Wireless connection speeds can be affected by router distance, walls, floors, nearby networks, interference, the WiFi band and the capabilities of the device being tested.
For a useful comparison, run a WiFi speed test close to the router and another from the room where the connection feels slow. You can also compare WiFi with Ethernet to help separate an internet-provider problem from a wireless-network problem.
Download Speed and Upload Speed
Download speed affects streaming, browsing, software downloads and receiving files. Upload speed affects video calls, cloud backups, livestreaming, sending files and publishing content online.
Many home internet plans provide much faster download speed than upload speed. That can be normal for the connection type, but very low upload speed may cause unstable video calls or slow cloud transfers even when ordinary browsing feels fast.
What Is a Good Internet Speed
A good speed depends on the number of users, devices and activities sharing the connection. Basic browsing and email need relatively little bandwidth, while 4K streaming, large downloads, cloud backups and several simultaneous users need much more.
Compare the result with your internet plan and your real needs rather than treating one number as perfect for everyone. Consistent speed, low latency and a stable connection are often more useful than one unusually high peak result.
How to Get Accurate Internet Speed Test Results
Pause downloads, streaming, cloud backups and software updates before running an internet speed test. Close unnecessary apps and disconnect unused devices when you need to measure the maximum speed available to one device.
Run several tests at different times of day. Test near the router, then test from your usual location. For the clearest baseline, connect one capable device directly to the router with Ethernet and compare that result with the WiFi speed test result.
Why Internet Speed Test Results Change
Results can change because of network congestion, WiFi interference, router performance, device limits, browser extensions, background activity, server distance and temporary conditions inside your internet provider's network.
One test is only a snapshot. Repeated tests make it easier to identify a pattern, such as slower evening speeds, weak WiFi in one room or high latency only when other devices are heavily using the connection.
Why WiFi Can Be Slower Than Ethernet
WiFi shares radio spectrum with nearby networks and devices, while Ethernet uses a dedicated cable between your device and router. Walls, distance, interference and older wireless hardware can reduce speed or increase latency.
A large difference between Ethernet and the WiFi speed test result usually points toward router placement, wireless interference, an older WiFi standard or a device limitation rather than a problem with the internet line itself.
